HDR and the Zone Plate - Softly Focused and Dreamy

Earlier, I made a post about Zone Plate photography. As a follow-up, I decided to create a few ZP images with my Olympus EP-1 camera using a homemade zone plate and an HDR sequence.

While zone plate is usually best done with large sensors or film, I am intrigued by the extra softness caused by the small imaging area of the m4/3 sensor.

The dreamlike glowing characteristic of zone plates is a result of light diffusion caused by the film base of the zone plate as well as some scattering caused by the plate rings.

If I didn't mention it before, zone plate is considered an alternative pinhole imaging technique. If you are up to the task, you may elect to create a Zone Plate image for Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day if you like. They like ZP too!

To me, the images are very painterly. When shot as an HDR sequence and processed, they can become even more so.

I am attracted to pinhole and zone plate simply because of their unique capacity to form wonderful images. I am always fascinated that these techniques can produce an image at all.

The images above were shot at +and - 2 to 3 stops and processed using Photomatix Pro, Photoshop and Nik Color Efex. I have added texture to the images as well.
